Our Chamber History

For the enhancement of the community and surrounding area, the Sussex and District Chamber of Commerce was formed on January 16, 1969.

Forging a greater bond between local businesses and entrepreneurs, a group of 16 past presidents of the Sussex Junior Chamber of Commerce formed the Sussex & District Chamber of Commerce on January 16, 1969 with Don MacVey serving as the first president.

Barney London Chaired, and the 16 former Jaycee presidents formed the Board of Directors. The first meeting was held at St. Paul’s United Church Hall. At that time they had 85 members.

One of the first major events hosted by the Sussex & District Chamber of Commerce was an Industrial Showcase at the Tank Hanger on the Army Camp Grounds in October, 1972.

The concerns of the Chamber at that time included civic and government affairs, tourism, Trans-Canada highway, economic development of the area, education, health and sustainable development, and the development of the Fundy Trail, Poley Mountain and potash mining.
